Movies of Tony Crollie's "Scale" Models

Ingenious models which tend to evolve with time (both forwards and backwards!).

Not a diving type, but an unsinkable 'boat' styled on a surface-running submarine.

Proof of concept trial for a novel propulsion/steering system which affords amazing manoeuvrability, but like driving a rear-wheel-steering dumper truck, it takes some getting used to!

"PS Panjandrum". The boat is adapted from a child's beach/bath toy with an MFA motor/gearbox driving the paddle wheels, which themselves are fashioned from plastic sink strainers spaced apart by the brass paddle blades. It is fully radio controlled and features a steam sound unit, synchronised to the paddle wheels by a micro-switch / cam and also has a smoke unit adapted from a model railway unit. Experiments continue to try and make it climb the beach like the famous WWII Giant Panjandrum, though an explosive payload is not planned - well, not at present anyway!

Maplin Speedboat

This boat represents a triumph of development over design - a Maplin toy R/C speedboat has been adapted to use a 'hot' 400 motor controlled by a forward only aircraft-type ESC powered from a two-cell Lithium Polymer battery. The wide-band radio gear has been replaced by a 'proper' crystal controlled 27MHz receiver and the bang-bang steering upgraded to proportional by installing a servo. The high speed running achieved has required strakes and trim-tabs to be added to the hull.

Not long after Alan Bond joined the club, he spotted a pondside bargain - a small cabin cruiser, complete except for ESC, with radio gear and almost new TX, for sale at £10 or was it £15? So he bought it for the TX and RX and gave the remainder to his prodigious boat building friend, Tony Crollie. After some experiments Tony decided to re-model it as a 1930s style naval launch - which apart from a whole new superstructure, also involved adding filler to modify the previous cabin cruiser style prow to give a more 'period' hull shape.

Whilst all this was going on, during a visit to the Lifeboat shop in Lymington the cute little naval-uniformed bears were spotted and it was realised they would make great passengers for the launch. The next step was obvious - add a table cloth and cups and saucers, plate of sandwiches etc (dolls house accessories). It is powered by a 380 motor running on a 6 cell NiMH pack and an Mtronics 15A ESC. After some experimentation to find the best prop, it now has a fair turn of speed.

HMS Judson" - a turn of the century, colonial river gun-boat - for "showing the flag" to the natives and the control of smuggling and piracy. It is powered by a 400 motor running on a 6 cell NiMH pack and an Mtronics 15A ESC. The for'ard gun is servo controlled.

Diving Platform

(movie: Alan Bond)

A modified Thunder Tiger fishing boat. The jib of the crane is made from a coat-hanger and its boiler is a small plastic bottle. The diver is modelled in plasticine and his air supply is provided by a battery-powered aquarium puffer. The diver now has a life-line as one of his brothers was lost in the Setley deeps. [Web-master's comment: any one working in standard diving gear without a safety line is asking to be lost; possibly we might have to incorporate a paragraph in the club rules.]
