The Bournemouth 2008 Air Festival
Reinvigorating a tradition going back to 1910 when one of the first ever aviation meetings was held at Bournemouth. Unfortunately tragedy struck when the Wright biplane of Charles S. Rolls (of Rolls Royce) broke up in the air. Bournemouth makes a fantastic venue for a flying display because the aircraft fly low over the sea and, standing on the top of the cliffs, they are often below you!

Battle_of_Britain_Memorial_Flight

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is operated by volunteers. On display at Bournemouth was a Lancaster bomber, the iconic Spitfire, and the unsung hero of the battle, the Hurricane. The photographs don't record the magical sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin engines.

Blue_Eagles
|
The Blue Eagles are the Army Air Corp's helicopter display team. If you didn't think that helicopters can fly upside-down watch their Lynx in action! The other machines are a Gazelle, Scout, and Allouette.

Tutor
|
The Grob Tutor is the aircraft used to initiate students in basic flying techniques. Unlike the later trainers, here the instructor and pupil sit side by side. This aircraft introduced a series of displays illustrating how a prospective fighter pilot progresses until he or she has control of a Typhoon F2.

King_Air
|
The King Air is used as a multi-engine advanced pilot trainer by the RAF. It has a high power to weight ratio but is not meant to be flown upside down. However the pilot went to Ringwood School and Brockenhurst College... says it all really!

Hawk
|
Hawk T1; first flown in 1974 the Hawk is a hugely successful training jet which can be armed with rockets, bombs and missiles. This one came from RAF Valley, in Anglesey, North Wales.

Eurofighter
|
The ultimate boys (and girrls) toy! The Eurofighter Typhoon F2 is designed to be inherently unstable in flight... only the computers keep it in the air. The result is amazing manoeuvrability at both low and fast speeds. It can reach an altitude of 36,000ft in less than two minutes. What you don't get from the pictures is the noise of the engines!

Black_Cats
|
The "Black Cats" are the Royal Navy helicopter display team. On this day they were somewhat limited in scope because one of their pilots was ill. However the remaining Lynx gave an impressive display.

Apparently, Guinot products include moisturisers to meet all skin types... even if you spend your time buffetted by over 100 mph winds. A really impressive display, but I did wonder if the girls couldn't find something else to do on a Thursday afternoon!
